When I Lived with Bats tells the story of a young girl and her family the summer that they moved into a house and discovered that it was inhabited by bats. They experience several humorous incidents with the bats and eventually come to regard them as friends.
One page declares that “Birds probably came from reptiles that lived in the age of dinosaurs. We can guess that millions of years ago, a small, furry animal climbed trees to hunt insects. Perhaps it began to glide from tree to tree with front and hind legs outstretched. Little by little, the skin of its back and belly stretched enough to cover the space between its front legs and hind legs. Finally, this flap of skin became a wing.” [pgs. 27-29]
The next portion of the text encourages the readers to imagine what it would be like to be a bat. This is accompanied by a picture of a person in a bat costume.
Vampire bats and their habits are mentioned. A illustration is also provided which shows the vampire bats vicious front teeth.
The little boy disobeys his mother in one scene and immediately regrets his actions.
