When We Went to the Park is a short picture book which tells the story of a little girl’s trip to the park with her grandfather. Because the book is in first person, we never learn the name of the little girl, but we see lots of cute pictures of her interacting with her surroundings. The story has a number theme (they saw one black cat, two big girls, three ladies, etc.), but the story did not seem to have been created merely as a vehicle to encourage counting. It has a charm all of its own, which is encouraged by its raggedy-sketchy style illustrations.
