When I found this book for ten cents at a garage sale, I picked it up thinking it looked cute. What I didn’t realize was that it was a picture book that I had read in my childhood. What a reunion!
Edgar Dolphin is a clever little dolphin. His mother has already taught him how to jump and swim – and how to chase ships. One day, while practicing his jumps, he sees an interesting ship in the distance. He decides to go investigate. What he didn’t expect was to be caught in the net and hauled up, over the side of the ship, into a tank on the deck. Will he ever escape and make his way back to his mother?
Edgar Dolphin and his mother love each other very much. However, when Edgar Dolphin sees the ship, his mother instructs him not to go near the ship. Instead of obeying her, he responds, “I know what I’m doing.” He promptly gets caught. After he escapes, it is stated that he is heading back to his mother, but we never see them reunited, and so don’t know if he apologizes for his behavior.
Edgar Dolphin features a very sweet, raggedy style of illustration.
