I don’t think I’ve ever met a child who doesn’t love to listen to stories. Equally, I don’t think I’ve ever met a child who doesn’t love spending time with his grandparents. Thus, a picture book all about the wonders of visiting with Grandma and Grandpa is certain to be a winner with children.
Franicia White has perceived this interest and, in The Blessings of Visiting Grandma and Grandpa, created a story which will satisfy children’s love for this topic. Told in rhyming poetry, Blessings celebrates the simple joy of family relationships through the depiction of various fun family activities – mealtimes, chores, games, and more. Not only will Blessings reawaken memories of past visits with their grandparents, but it will also encourage children to form new memories with them.
The illustration style is blocky rather than detailed and features bold colors. Usually I would dislike this style, but I found that in this case the lack of detail is appropriate because it helps children to visualize their own family in the illustrations. Also, the meter feels slightly uneven at times, but I doubt children will notice this.
Conclusion. Very sweet – children will enjoy this book!
