My mom and I have always loved little Golden Books. Sure, some of them aren’t the best stories – we avoid those. But as a whole, Little Golden Books are sweet and innocent and, most importantly, have the cutest illustrations! Poems to Read to the Very Young is no exception to this rule. Although a few of the poems are, perhaps silly (or feature slightly unrealistic happenings), on the whole they are sweet and funny.
Here is my favorite poem from this book.
– Kate Cox Goddard
Sometimes when I get into bed,
And cannot go to sleep,
And after all my prayers are said,
And I have counted sheep,
I call to Mother and I say:
“A drink of water, please.”
She knows that I’m not thirsty, and I only want to tease.
And so I laugh when she comes in
And opens wide the door,
She knows I only want to kiss
And hug her just once more.
The poem is accompanied by an illustration of a mother and daughter hugging.
Conclusion. Sweet poetry – children will enjoy this collection.
