In this simple biography, Ann McGovern begins with Columbus’s early desires to explore, narrates the difficulties he faced in financing and executing his voyages of discovery, and ends with his disappointment and death.
I really appreciated that, while discussing Columbus’ belief that the world was round, Ms. McGovern does not pretend that he was the first to think this but that many knowledgeable men were coming to hold the same theory.
One page describes the dragons that sailors believed lurked in the outer seas, and includes an illustration of a sea monster eating a boat.
Conclusion. Good – children will be interested in learning more about the discovery of America.
