Mandy and James return!

The Story.

It’s Valentine’s Day and love is in the air! Not only has James received an anonymous Valentine, but Lydia Fawcett received one as well. It was delivered to her by a beautiful collie who seems to have been trained specially for the job.

But when the collie, Ash,  gets in a fight with Major, Sam Western’s old German Shepherd, both dogs are seriously injured. Will they recover? And will all the Valentines sort themselves out?

Discussion.

Due to the Valentine’s Day theme, there is a certain amount of good-natured ribbing and teasing on the subject of crushes. The kids also take a jab at more serious match-making when they try to set up Lydia with Ernie and Andrew with Jane.

The scene where Major and Ash fight will probably be intense for children. The publishers had the good sense NOT to include an illustration of the hurt dogs (Unlike in Hound in the Hospital), but it’s still sad. Also, Major has to be put down, which creates a sad scene.

Conclusion. Actually a pretty cute story.
