Title: Feet First
Recommended Ages: 8-12
Star Rating: ★★★★
Feet First consists of fourteen five-to-six page short stories. Each of these stories features a protagonist as they engage in their favorite sport – basketball, baseball, swimming, kayaking, fishing, football, etc. In some of the stories, the protagonist learns the importance of pouring his all into his chosen activity – in others he learns that sports aren’t the most important thing in life. In some, the importance of being kind to people is emphasized while in anothers is taught the importance of barreling through against all opposition.
In No Better Feeling, Julie is annoyed that she has to take care of her baby brother when she could be playing basketball. She realizes how silly she was to prize a sport over her brother after she neglects him and he gets lost while she plays.
In Little Johnny Short Step, one of Johnny’s legs is shorter than the other, which leads to teasing from the other kids in his class. However, Bob, understanding Johnny’s longing to play baseball, takes Johnny under his wing and welcomes him onto the team.
In What Are You Fishing For?, Joey learns how silly it is to argue with other people about personal preferences.
In Friends for Maria, Tina goes out of her way to offer friendship to Maria when the other girls exclude her.
In Girl’s Team Catcher, Tom finds himself on an all-girls baseball team. Although the girls originally tease him, he proves his worth and eventually fits in.
Conclusion. One of the better collections of Highlights stories.
