Okay, so yeah, this book is pretty cute. It’s the perfect bedtime read-aloud. (If your kid isn’t all keyed up ready for an adventure story, that is.) Because this book is a book of bedtime messages. It’s the message Panda gives her cub – “Dream of climbing”. It’s the message of the dolphins –

Resting in the rolling ocean,
Sleepy dolphins close their eyes.
High above, a golden moon
Is tossed into the starlit sky.
Dolphin whispers, “Leap up higher!”

Each rhyme is accompanied by a picture of the parent animal and their sleepy eyes-closing baby. The illustrations are colorful and lifelike but also dreamy. In the end, a human father whispers to his daughter

“Dream you’ll sail to far-off places,
Then sail back by morning’s light.
I’ll be waiting here…”

And I just noticed that he’s holding a copy of Panda Whispers with the pages open to the fox and her kits. Oh my. The cuteness!

Conclusion. A great nighttime read-aloud.
