This is one of those picture books that was written for a very obvious purpose – and the purpose wasn’t to tell a story. The purpose was to tell children that God cares about them… and if they are distressed enough and pray hard enough, he may even send them friends to help collect seashells. But I digress.
Charlie, the blue crab, is out collecting seashells. When he tries to play with the red crabs, they ignore him. Charlie, feeling shunned, prays to God saying that nobody cares for him. And what do you think happens next? Another little red crab appears, and offers to gather seashells with Charlie! Yay for Charlie! [And God.]
Conclusion. Not horrible, but very preachy. Preachy as in – “Let’s not even bother with a story line because the message is all that matters” kind of preachy.
