Title: Mike Mulligan and His Steam ShovelMike Mulligan and His Shovel
Author: Virginia Lee Burton
Pages: 44
Recommended Ages: Read Aloud
Star Rating: ★★★★

Mike Mulligan had a beautiful steam shovel named Mary Anne. Together they dug great canals, cut the path for a road through the mountains, and leveled fields for landing strips. And then came along the new gasoline and electric shovels and Mike Mulligan and Mary Anne were out of a job. But as Mike Mulligan and Mary Anne headed west, they come upon a tiny town with a big need… a need that only Mike and Mary can fill!

The illustrations are cute in a fifties sort of way – also, the story (featuring as it does a willing workman hunting for a job) will be an encouragement to children.

Conclusion. A fun read aloud.
