Nancy Drew is excited to arrive at Shadow Ranch where she plans to spend a fun vacation with her friends, Bess Marvin and George Fayne. But upon her arrival she is greeted with somber news – Shadow Ranch has been plagued by mysterious occurrences and Edward Rawley, Bess and George’s uncle and owner of Shadow Ranch, has decided that it is too dangerous for the girls to remain on the ranch.
Can Nancy not only convince Uncle Ed that the girls are up to any challenge, but also solve the mystery of the shimmering ghost horse who has begun to haunt the ranch?
Nancy’s relationship with her father remains a positive element – she was more than willing to delay her trip when she heard that he had a job for her, and even when she is apart from him she still thinks of him and ponders what his perspective would be in her case.
Bess Marvin remarks that several of the young cowbpys on the ranch are handsome. Later, the boys ask the girls to accompany them to a barn dance (which they accept). Nancy and her date, Dave, develop a closer friendship, but nothing really happens between them.
The “ghost horse” is proved to be of naught but natural origin.
