Title: The Stranger in the ShadowsNancy Drew #103 - The Stranger in the Shadows
Author: Carolyn Keene
Pages: 149
Reading Level: 7-10
Star Rating: ★★

Modern Nancy Drew.

The Story.

Nancy Drew’s friend, Suzanne Moorely, has suspicions. She suspects that Paula de Jagger, a foreign exchange student who has been living with the Moorelys for several months, is involved in shady activity. Can Nancy pinpoint Paula’s activities?

At first Nancy is skeptical – Suzanne almost seems to be motivated out of jealousy towards Paula. But as she gets to know Paula, she has to admit that her actions do seem rather strange…

Can Nancy sort through robbery, blackmail, and betrayal to arrive at the real solution to this mystery?

The whole story has more of a grungy feel to it – guys and girls interact with each other in more of a flirty rather than companionable manner. Also, the story itself is all around modern and unappealing, rather than fun and old-fashioned.

‘Gee’ is used twice.

Conclusion. I prefer the original Nancy Drew stories.
