Title: The Wild Little HorseThe Wild Little Horse
Author: Rita Gray
Illustrator: Ashley Wolff
Pages: 32
Reading Level: Read Aloud
Star Rating: ★★★

The illustrations in this picture book are pretty cute – the color palette of rust, aqua, and other earthy tones is really soothing, actually. But I’m still a little surprised it made its way into print – and as a part of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, no less. Why? Because the text is kinda lame.

The text is poetic with a stanza or two on every other page. But the handling of the rhyme, rhythm, and imagery is just awkward. Sure the subject matter is cute enough – a little pony running along a coast, testing his abilities is a swell set up – but the recording of it lacked.

Conclusion. Nothing really wrong with this book, but also nothing superior about it.
