I’ve already reviewed the book Frog and Toad Are Friends, which was a Caldecott Honor book. In that review I applauded the delightful friendship which was depicted between these two amphibians. In this book that adorable companionship was continued in several new adventures.
Both characters learn several lessons throughout the story. In chapter three, aptly named Shivers, Frog tells Toad a ghost story in which he encounters the enormous ghost of a frog named ‘Old Dark Frog’. The Old Dark Frog tells Frog that after he jump ropes one hundred times he will be hungry and will eat Frog. Frog is terrified, but finds a way to outwit the Dark Frog and leaves him roaring and screaming behind him. Toad asks Frog if his was a true story, to which Frog responds, “Maybe it was and maybe it wasn’t.” This entire story (like the rest of the book) is illustrated.
Conclusion. An adorable book (apart from chapter three).
