I gotta say, I would have never thought a person would pull this one off – much less win a Caldecott Honor Medal while they were at it. But by reading the title of this book – Have You Seen My Duckling? – you have effectively just read the entire book.
That’s right, the book consists of the one phrase, repeated over and over as a momma duck swims about searching for her lost little duckling who swam out after a butterfly early one morning.
Oh, right, that last phrase “early one morning” was on the first page. Which you just read, so technically you’ve still read the whole book. Hmm.
The illustrations showcase the variety of creatures to be found on a pond as the mother inquires of each of them as to her duckling’s whereabouts. As a fun little I-Spy hat tip, the lost little duckling can also be seen in each picture, off in a corner tra-la-la-ing.
Conclusion. Cute enough, but children will no doubt want added description from the narrator.
