I bought it because it was a Caldecott Honor Medalist. I’m keeping it because it was adorable. :)
Oliver the cat is a tabby very much in love with the style and structure of his life. His housekeeper, Miss Tilly, is often out, but she is always on hand just when he needs a nip of liver or chopped beef. She really is most obliging and her schedule affords him loads of quiet time to bask in the sun. But then one day she brings home a “surprise” – a fluffy white thing she calls “Marshmallow”. Oliver is suspicious and unhappy. What is this Marshmallow doing in his home? Something must be done about it.
Although Oliver is, as aforementioned, inclined to be resentful and suspicious of Marshmallow, all of this changes the day he has his first real encounter with the rabbit who is in fact very lonely and longing for a mother’s care. Just as Oliver is trying to decide whether to pounce or not, Marshmallow gives a few funny hops and buries himself against Oliver, happy at last to have found a companion. Their relationship develops into the firmest and fullest of friendships.
Conclusion. A very sweet little story.
